Quote:Hmm... sounds like a internet contest to me. Let's punch it up a little:
The city of Topeka (Kan.) has announced a design competition for a new multi-use ballpark, with submissions due at the end of September.
... the city apparently feels it's in a position to make a new ballpark happen.
Design a Ballpark for Topeka! Win Cash!
1st place, $5,500
2nd place, $4,500
3rd place, $3,500
(Funds will be provided from private contributions from the business community through GO Topeka, the economic development arm of the Greater Topeka Chamber.)
Just provide the City of Topeka with:
1. Basic schematic drawing
2. A cost estimate
3. Renderings that depict the character of baseball in Topeka
4. Information on submitters credentials and experience
5. Registration Form
6. Site Requirements / Other Activities
Download the competition form (PDF).
Don't delay! Contest presentations must be made September 27-29, 2007.
Kidding aside...
A $5.5K prize? ...for a ballpark with no chosen occupant? ...in a community that hasn't normally been interested in building its own ballpark?
What BPD left out from the application form is this quote:
Quote:Hmm... someone in Wichita wants a contest so have some ballpark designs in hand (retractable roof optional) in case someone might want to put a ballclub there?
One of the great American pastimes is baseball -- and in Topeka, it is no different. Many of its residents have participated in baseball at several levels giving Topeka a rich baseball history. However, there is one thing missing -- an affiliated or independent minor league baseball team and stadium of its own.
If one were to be developed in Topeka, what would it look like? What would fit Topeka? The community wants to be prepared with a "Topeka Wish List" should the opportunity for this time of baseball team and multi-use stadium become a reality.
The particulars about what they want include:
* Concourse level entry
* 1,800 fixed seats, 700 bench seats in grandstand
* Min. 500 berm seats
* 2 dedicated picnic areas
* 8 concourse level luxury boxes (min 12 seats/box; 2 larger party sized ones)
* 12 open-air suites (min. 8 seats/suite)
* Min. 12 terrace tables (min. 4 seats/table)
* Ample restrooms,
* First aid, security and customer service areas
* Concessions for multiple vendors
* "Real" merchandise store (min. 1,500 sq. ft)
* 4 ticket windows (min. 600 sq. ft)
* Press box
* Kids play area
* Clubhouses (25 lockers/each), umpire room, dugouts, etc.
* Office space (min. 2K sq. ft)
Hmm... is this big enough for a NoL AA or even ULB club? with only 2,500 fixed seats?
ez: Please tell us more about this. You're the Topeka ballpark expert.
