Any guesses on who your team might lose?
If the RailCats keep anybody, my hope is that they keep Esquer and Wallace, the catchers.
Do the RiverHawks get in on this deal or not?

I know that a sports editorial from waukegan stated that they hoped to get Tony Cogan. They pointed out that he would be closer to home. They have mentioned
how it probably won't happen. Heck, if he decides to play next season, the RailCats would have to be crazy not to exercise rights to protect him from
getting drafted.

Here's an interesting article by Hilary Smith of the NWTimes. She quotes Tagert saying, in essence, that he thinks few teams will protect
catchers..."because no team needs 6 catchers." He also stated that there probably will be a lot of veterans unprotected. And he would be surprized
if all 12 of the players taken actually make it to Spring training with the Fielders.
http://nwitimes.com/sports/columnists/hillary-smith/article_8c0a18d0-44a7-5aa6-907a-85ad97083f04.html I guess he think that since you can only have 4 veterans, the Fielders may not take a lot of them. But they may pick some up to make trades to get 2 younger guys for 1 veteran. I agree with John that catching is very important. Esquer and Wallace are both excellent catchers. Anthony with the great arm and nobody blocks pitches better than Brett and he had a .994 fielding average. Both call a very good game. If Tagert protects 1 of them he can't protect someone else. Actually, as nice as the Railcats had it with both of them, Anthony and Brett both deserve a shot at an everyday job. Ofensively, they are both solid, but the other catchers in the league are mashers, but will not provide the defense. I think that most teams will look to protect rookies that will contribute and pitching. I think Cogan will be protected. It should be interesting. We will see what happens in a few hours.

Be careful about the 100% accuracy of her "quotes" because she sometimes does not get things EXACTLY as quoted. I know of a couple of players who
earlier didn't say what she said they did. It's what she interpreted. She tries.

If you click on the railcats website, they have a place to ask questions of Andy Viano.
No idea how much or what he would reply to, but we do have our questions, don't we? aviano@railcatsbaseball.com |

They have Brett listed as a RHP. Something is not right there. Go to the Fielders website. They have all 12 choices listed already.

How odd they would take both Gary catchers, contrary to my belief that the RCs should have protected both of them. Guess I belong in the front office of a
Northern League franchise. Give me a ballpark, PLEASE!

Really surprised the Flyers let Jeff Dunbar go. One of their best players last year, without a doubt. He must have indicated to the Flyers that he wasn't
coming back...or something.

Could be calculated risk. What are the odds he will take 3 catchers, two from one team?
Riordan has an idea of the type of team he wants. I know that if I am KC, I don't let Helps go that easily. |

I guess Fargo took a bit of a slap but I don't think Mossey is any great shakes. I did like Bakker a little more.
Blackwell was one of the great mysteries. What are the odds somebody gets traded back to their original team? |

Hmmm | ||

I don't know who else was unprotected, but maybe they took both Gary catchers to try and trade one back for someone who was protected.

I will trade you one Fehlant Lentini for Jose Yepez and the rights to Willie Glen.

The interesting part about Riordan is he is an insider in the Frontier and has been for a few years. He can probably spot marginal talent at the ground level.
I would not be surprised if he puts together a contender out of the chute. But he probably will be on the road all season. |
