Posts: 26 (28-Aug-09 03:46:53) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None 2009 Season Miles Traveled by Franchise Winnipeg 16,462 Gary 13,632 Kansas City 12,416 Fargo/Moorhead 11,552 Joliet 10,355 Schaumberg 9,960 I was bored at work so I thought I'd add up the miles traveled by each team this season. I was surprised that Gary was 2^nd. The other interesting point was that the two franchises that traveled the least would miss the playoffs if they started today thus shooting holes in the theory that a heavy travel schedule has anything to do with performance. Anecdotally we know that it has to have some effect, (Haven't we all experienced the muscle fatigue from sitting in a confined space for an extended period of time?) but the number don't lie…Do they?

For example, if Fargo's road miles were mostly on Mondays instead of Thursdays, that might have an effect. Let's factor in the time spent at traffic lights, or toll booths. Seriously, I think part of this is due to some rather peculiar inefficiency in league scheduling. Probably it is hard to avoid some of that, though. Will the last road trip add enough miles to the traveling teams' total to balance this out at all?

I always wondered if when the Chicago land Teams play each other do they return home and sleep in there own beds after each game making life a little easier or do they still stay in hotels as they would if they had to come to I 29 teams. I always like to sleep in my own bed and sleep better. and if they return home it sure would beat sitting around a room or lobby waiting to go to the park. Can you satisfy my curiosity

You do make a good point about travel on off days as opposed to overnight travel especially on trips of over 250 miles. If things are slow I'll check that out today. btw...using 250 miles as a cut off would eliminate all the Chicagoland trips as well as the Wpg/Fargo trips. It's might seem arbitrary but I find that rigor sets in at about the 4 hour mark when I take a road trip.

Depending on when they arrive at the border and how busy it is they can add an hour or two onto each trip. Not much by itself but it can add up over a season.

I would suspect that a 3-gamer between the Hammers and RailCats would not include any motels. Hell, it's a 90-minute drive I do know that one trip Gary made to Schaumburg included a rather gruesome incident when the bus got caught in a gridlock on 294 and was nearly late for the game. One other, a couple of years back, the Flyers had come back from KC and were scheduled to play at the Steel Yard at 11 a.m. the next morning on a kids special. Now, the RailCats, KNOW-ing this, went ahead and did it anyhow. The Flyers got the wet side of the newspaper on that game, which started 15 minutes late because they couldn't find a bus driver to replace the one whose road hours had maxxed out. The performance was obviously affected by the travel and the very little lack of decent rest. But I'd guess the issue with road games for these guys probably is more about what they have for dinner than anything. Limited meal money and a guy the size of Juan Diaz, hooo boy! Another thing back when the Bushie pencil pushers decided to make getting a passport the next best government adventure, there were a few U.S. players who had to scramble to get into the Canadian venues. The Gary broadcaster was telling about the nightmare one evening during a game. All the same, any excuses the players have probably are stated by somebody else. I seriously doubt any of them would say "well, we lost because we spent the night in a cruddy old bus." Home field is supposed to favor the home team, a little, don't you think?

A max of 10 (KC) and a minimum of 7 (Gary). And as requested outside of the Goldeyes everyone else had either 4 or 6 border crossings. The Goldeyes had 17.

Can you satisfy my curiosity The Chicagoland teams sleep in their own beds (for the most part), but we're talking about at least three hours round trip to get to and from their beds. In order to achieve this, we need to make a couple of assumptions, one of which is "balance" in the schedule, as opposed to "shorter" ... meaning that if you are, say ... Gary, you now get to go to Rockford (not Zion yet, because it has no park) instead of Winnipeg for at least a couple of road trips. What this means is that Winnipeg, in an effort to get its 48 home games, needs to play somebody at home that doesn't have to travel quite as far. Fargo? Hey, great idea. They can't play Gary, because Gary has to go to Rockford instead or be "home" for a road series with Zion. So adding two teams to the roster next year reduces travel by next to zilch for the Goldeyes, but it does reduce the cost (I think, not sure) for the RailCats. Zion gets to be on the road all the time until and if or when their Field of Landfills is built. I am not sure who pays for their travel costs to their home games but there is precedent from 2002, I suppose, on how that works. The point, I guess, is that expanding the league would seem to be a rather brutal way of trying to contain travel costs. I would naturally assume the other advantages of growing the league largely outweigh that aspect of it. Long run, the Fish, FM and KCK will not get to see reduced travel costs in any event, but will get to host some players who will be called RiverHawks or Fielders. And at the end of the season, most of them will be traded from teams they already play. I would love to be the fly on the wall in the office where they draw up the 2010 NoL schedule!

I may love baseball, but I'll be the first one to admit that I'm horrible at it. You know you're bad when you lead the league in strikeouts when you're playing in a t-ball association. You know you're bad when you're the backup benchwarmer. I was so bad that my most memorable hit was when I was beaned to walk in a winning run. But still, love the game way too much.
