I guess. Would be nice not to get swept in either home series.

Short of a Saltdog collapse it's just a battle to end the season above .500.

I threw in the towel after the Saturday Lincoln game. It's obvious that the Saints can't compete with the Wichitas and Lincolns of the league. If they
keep bringing in more Minnesota players to play, Doug Woog may come out of retirement to coach 1st base.

Last night really did it for me when Ariail came in and threw 12 consecutive balls to walk the bases loaded. to start
off the 7th. No batter even bothered to lift a bat.
When your bullpen's doing that you're not going to compete with the 'Dogs and 'Nuts for a playoff spot. The 'Dogs lost, but the Saints made up no ground. And today may be rained out too. Maybe that's a good thing. |

2nd straight year out of the playoffs. The Saints management has not put a good product on the field. They have done nothing to improve Midway and they pay
lip service to a new stadium. Now they have been reduced to announcing phony attendance numbers so they can lead the league. Mike Veeck is not the same guy
that arrived here 16 years ago. I'll take my outdoor baseball money to Target Field next year.

As far as phony attendance numbers, I don't see it. I think the phony attendence numbers left when Bill Fanning did. Maybe Veeck isn't the same guy that arrived here in 1993, but I think it's for the better as he's become a sharper businessman. The old Veeck would've caved in to the Secton F'rs demands to not leave Midway (1995), now he knows he doesn't have the market cornered on outdoor professional baseball next year and is taking steps to keep the Saints as a viable entertainment option.

I'm also not going to charge people $12 to come and sit in my ratty apartment. Or charge $5 to sit in the worst part of my ratty apartment, where you
can't see anything and have to use an outhouse for a restroom. But I guess I am not as good a businessman as Mike Veeck. Seriously, I was at game 1 in 1993
and have been a regular 8-15 game a year guy. The magic and the fun are long gone. I don't think the Saints management is trying anymore. They are content
with bad baseball in bad park. They will be in trouble next year. The Twins really do have a lot of seats between $10 - $25 at Target Field and I can't
wait. I also see no reason to wait for a better Midway or a new park. The city can't and the Saints won't pay for it.

First let's not argue paid attendance vs. turnstile count that's a total waste of time.
The Saints HAVE done a few things to improve things like the scoreboard and Twig's Place. The facility itself is the city's and even they aren't interested in investing in it. The product on the field argument seems pretty lame also especially if you think 2 years is too long. We've gone a lot longer with miserable clubs and there are plenty of other clubs who've had SO much worse. Besides, we may have seen some guys on their ways up pass through this season. This year the Saints have done a whole lot more than lip service about a new ballpark. There has been a great deal of active work in he Lowertown area for months. They brought Bill Murray in to get more interest. They have started a group to get fans more involved FOR a new ballpark instead of against it. This year has seen more solid activity than in years past. It's not their fault that the Twins, Gophers, and now Viqueens have to get their new facilities from the public before they can. I look forward to Target Field but won't stop going to Saints games wherever they play. It'll always be more affordable and appraochable than any MLB club could ever be. |

The apartment metaphor is poor in this situation. The fact is Midway was never built for professional play. No one knew that the Saints would be so incredibly
popular nor that the ballpark standards for upstart indy ball would become that of affiliated ball. The decision NOT to take up Norm's offer on a new
ballpark in '95 was a mistake, but it didn't look like such a bad idea at the time.
The Saints ownership is definitely trying harder than ever to get a new ballpark. It was the earlier management (under Fanning) that got tripped up by the Save Midway crowd that actively fought nearly any real improvements to the ballpark. The Saints are willing to pony up several million to make the future ballpark a much better experience than Midway. Target Field will give outdoor baseball fans a great venue to see MLB talent. Midway and the Saints will do just fine in spite of that change. For a start there won't be much (if any) tailgating at Target Field so even the reluctant addition of that around the Dome won't be available. And, given that people spent more years than the Saints have been around working hard to prevent the Twins from getting a new ballpark, the Saints still have quite a few years to go before they catch up. Obviously you aren't having fun at Midway. Thousands of others do each game. Enjoy Target Field.

You obviously have no clue how independent baseball works if you think the team isn't trying to win. They had a great team when the season started but when
you lose guys to affiliated teams and also to Japan it is really hard to make up for that. Most of the "good" players have already been signed by
other clubs and anything you can get is a downgrade over what you have. But the whole point of independent baseball is to get your guys back to a major league
organization. George Tsamis does as good a job as anyone in acquiring talent and working the phones to get new players but it isn't easy.

Gee, have'nt made the playoffs in 2 years? I know Saint fans expect alot but, I'm a long time Canary fan exiled in Texas now. I have been to Grande
Prairie and Wichita this summer to see my Birds. I've heard alot of canary fans that want the manager fired for the team's bad season. Wow! What have
you done lately! You would think after 1 playoff visit since '93 the fans could give the team a break.

There was investigation of doing a "Guilded Cage" rework of Midway and the costs are too high. For all the original Sioux Falls Stadium design flaws,
there was so little IN the actual stadium grandstand and so much open, undeveloped city land AROUND it the current form was obviously doable. The existing
grandstand was a low-slope bowl with adequate legroom with space for replacing seating and good ground level sightlines. It also was relatively short and does
not need to accommodate football and soccer part of the year.
Midway has no open land around it: railroad to the north, a small sliver of land between it and the street to the south, the city fire dept area to the east and the (already limited) parking to the west. Contrary to the "renovation" crowd, expanding Midway was a bad idea in '95 and adding more would make it an even larger, uglier monster than it already it. The plumbing is already overtaxed and built deep into the structure itself meaning lots of concrete demolition just to get to the water and sewer mains to increase the capacity needed for the bathrooms. Then there are the questions of what to do to improve the narrow concourses, limited concession area and woefully inadequate staff offices and team clubhouses. The grandstand cannot be extended without eliminating Midway's other role as public football and soccer facility (which is played across the field, essentially from foul pole to foul pole). The seating is already cramped and uncomfortable with no practical way to retrofit real seats in it. The bowl grade is steep and starts over 6 ft. from ground level and would put skyboxes up about 10' higher than in SF. When the Saints and NoL were still an experiment in '93 Midway was one of the top location in the league. But standards were low, facilities old (except SC) and few of us (myself included) knew how that would change. |

That's what I thot. I was just remembering back before the NL, what Sioux Falls Stadium was like. Amatuer league teams used it, and there were no seats in
the lower section, just metal folding chairs. The upper section was rotting wood bleachers. The visiting team had no clubhouse, they had to use the public
restrooms. It just seemed strange they would even consider SF for a professional team again.

DoobieTexas wrote:Really, for the Original 6 of the NoL, Sioux City had the only facility that was considered acceptable for minor league ball. I was just thinking about that when I was in Rochester watching the Northwoods League title game. I reflected back to 1993 and was still amazed that Mayo Field housed a team. Same thing, a facility for amateur ball but not much else. I should've stocked up on souvenirs when I had a chance back then.

At least the season's not over already (like it felt after the Saltdog series).
If the Saints win tonight, it will continue tomorrow night (regardless of what SF does). We may have given up, but George and the guys haven't. In spite of posts above, the next few games STILL have meaning. That's a clear improvement on last year's results. Even if they don't make the playoffs, it's a lot more exciting to watch games when there's still a chance. |
