I was reading the NL transactions for the day and noticed Robbie signed a contract. So he's on the roster now? What's the reason for this?

they are short players after decaster's signing, peipcorn was in the hospital tuesday afternoon before playing tuesday night,and cole zimmerman is hurt so
they have no backup to alan rick. i'm sure he is being signed as an emergency body in case someone else goes down.
