The Saints want to build a new 7,500 seat stadium in Lowertown on the site of the old Gillette building across the street from the Farmer's Market. Now if they can find someone to cover the other 2/3s they're not covering. It's going to be tough right now. I also wonder who'll pay to demolish the existing structure. Getting rid of it would liven up the area around the Farmer's Market.
With a dozen new bars and restaurants opening in the neighborhood over the past three years, including the Bulldog and the brand new Barrio, a new ballpark would be a field of dreams for nearby business owners.
...
Even though Lowertown's resurgence is already music to business owners' ears, the people who live there say the neighborhood could be even better when the Saints go marching in.
...
The Saints say a new stadium would cost about $30 million. Since they would use the facility about a third of the time, the organization would come up with about a third of the cost, $10 million. They hope to raise the rest of the money through private investors and possibly taxpayers.
