To calculate the "magic number..."
"Take the number of games remaining [96 or 48 in the half/season], add one, then subtract the number of games ahead in the loss column of the standings of the closest opponent (or, in the case of a trailing team, the leading opponent)." (source) |

So then for the Cats its 227=16 is the first part the other part is 48-20-13 = 15 so is it 15 or 16??

It's 16. The second equation should have a "+1" on it as the first example does.
If you want to do it logically rather than by a simple equation: Fort Worth is 20 and 6. If they were to lose all their remaining games, they'd finish at 20 and 28. So if El Paso loses 29 games, they can't catch Forth Worth. El Paso has already lost 13 games, so 16 more losses and they're done. Going the other direction - if El Paso were to win all their remaining games, they'd finish at 35 and 13. Fort Worth would need to win 36 games in that event to stay ahead of them. Fort Worth has already won 20 games, so 16 more wins and El Paso can't catch them. This can, of course, all be complicated by the fact that the leagues sometimes don't make-up rain-outs, so towards the end of the half, you may have a team that actually won't get 48 games in... |

I'll tell you an EASY way to figure the magic number. Look at the second place team.... calculate the number of games remaining in the half (or season,
if that's the case). Add that number to their win total. The majic number is the number of wins the first place team needs in order to have one more win
than that! In other words if team A has a record of 18-10 and team B is 14-14. There are 48 games in the half. Team B could still conceivably win all 20
games remaining. That would give them 34 wins. So the magic number for team A is 17, because that would give them 35 wins.... one more win than team B can
possibly achieve.

Sorry Sean, I guess I did not read your post or whatever! You had the simple and easy way up there before me! I didn't think I glossed over your post,
but I must have. It doesn't have to be a complicated formula... it is just as Sean states. JPD

No one's eliminated in the South just yet, but you might want to wait awhile before counting. There is liike 22 games left and the Cats aren't a lock for the playoff spot already. |
