On the transaction wire today, El Paso released RHP Angel Aragon and catcher Mat Kent.
Now, Aragon didn't throw a pitch for the Diablos all year, and I think he spent the whole season on the inactive list. Kent, though, is a little harder to figure out. 91 games, .289, 9 HR, 47 RBI, .437 SLG. The strikeout-to-walk ratio (72-10) stunk, but other than that, he was a pretty good player for El Paso, and a left-handed bat who won't turn 29 until next July.
He would have Veteran status in the AA in 2009, so if I had to guess, I'd figure that A) El Paso has a different plan for its four Vet spots; or B) Kent is retiring. I've seen nothing on the Diablos website about it--although to tell the truth, the El Paso site is the most poorly updated website in the league. Their transactions page stops at July 1, and their roster page still has J.D. Reininger (dealt to Sioux Falls)--but doesn't have Marcel Longmire.
Anyone closer to the situation know why Kent is leaving El Paso? I know this board doesn't get nearly as much traffic as some of the other AA teams, but there must be other people who pay attention to league transactions...
