good news, bad news article about the state of the RailCats as they enter their fourth season at the Steel Yard.
The good news: Attendance is up.

Of greater interest, King said, are the attendance numbers, which have increased each of the past two seasons. "The most interesting demographic is the number of nonresidents who come in for the baseball games," King said.
The bad news: Development hasn't happened. Other than Bennigan's, which is "doing well," the predicted business growth around the ballpark (and downtown) is still not there.
So the love/hate relationship with the ballpark expense continues. It makes one wonder if anyone noticed the RailCats won a championship last season.
And then, on the other hand...

Quote:So which is it? Good economic development or not? Probably a matter of expectations.
Some influential people still consider that a huge boondoggle in a town with serious crime, education and housing issues. King, correctly, believed that the only way to solve the city's considerable problems was to use its casino dollars as seed money for economic development.
Quote:At least Tagert has a positive outlook that extends beyond one season. If they can avoid being a "one-year wonder" it may change some more people's attitudes.
"I say this, not with any arrogance, there's a lot more people in this league now that are aware of what we're doing here," Tagert said recently.
(...)
"When I interviewed," Tagert said, "what I told Roger was, 'That's where I want us to be. I want us to be viewed in the same breath as the Fargos and the Winnipegs.' "
When that happens, Gary baseball's credibility gap that once seemed so wide will have pretty much disappeared.
