Posts: 32 Feb 11 12 11:58 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None is it not only very possible but even a safe bet that the texas teams of the NAL will be the only teams taking the field in 2012? while every texas NAL team has a schedule (with the teams all staying inside the state), just one northern division team is even showing signs of life....san rafael (a joke in it self). calgary is dead with no owner. chico is homeless with no web/facebook activity since october. edmonton (while the most financially stable) has had no activity since september and everything about them still lists 2011. fort mcmurry not sure when they will start but will announce the date soon. fullerton's only proof of existance is still their team page on the NAL site announcing that their reborn. henderson has a logo on their league site's 2012 teams. maui's last life was in december when they announced their manager. yuma's last two announcment was to say merry christmas and that they are sold to a 1 cent company who will change their name to start a exciting new era in yuma. and then their is san rafael...full steam ahead having tryouts, visiting schools, and selling tickets to their maiden season at their ballpark with a softball diamond in centerfield. it is february...can anyone give me any reason there will be a NAL outside of texas? i know last year they officially announced their schedule in early april but that was to wait on a team or two....not half of a league.

When the NAL was first announced I did not expect the league to least 1 season, yet they still exist in some form. I still think that they league will die out sooner or later.

Posts: 2213 Feb 12 12 11:37 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, it has no real reason to die. Not unlike the Northern League, it can "exist" as long as it wants, just wait for people to join. Being a bad organization isn't really as much of a problem for them as it is for their image. But as we have seen, there appears to be enough suckers out there who will continue to buy into it. The UBL doesn't need the NAL, probably never really did other than to give the appearance that it was in a larger geography -- who knows why that was necessary, other than maybe to latch onto some advertisers. The NAL (or GBL) will always appeal to somebody who thinks getting a minor league team for their town is a good family value. Somebody will always buy into that, until they learn that the new ballpark will cost $10 million. But if there's a college field nearby, that's good enough. And on and on we go. Places like Zion are just down the road from where you live. You just need a hook.

The GBL, ULB and NoL clubs all jumped into the NAL as a way to deal with few clubs each had left after all their own disasters. Now that all the NoL clubs are dead along with several in the GBL, they're the only ones left. What the GBL/NAL has had is winter ball and, at least in the past, was centralized ownership options and league sponsorship revenue streams. As things have collapsed and the seriousness of its problems increased it's not difficult to see them fold. It's sort of ironic given that just a few years ago the GBL was going to buy up/into all the ULB markets. Now they seem to prop up what's left.

Posts: 657 Feb 12 12 3:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Why is a $10 million dollar ballpark or a 2-5 million dollar upgrade to a existing park such a problem in the US when giant multi million/billion dollar stadiums are being built on a regular basis? Just currious or is it a problem with the minor league owners that have put a blackeye on indy baseball?

Most of them just put up some aluminum bleachers and a chain link fence, maybe some lights and a trailer for beer sales ... they really don't understand how "real" minor leagues work. They just think it's glorified American Legion ball. Then when the cost is presented, they go gridlock on it. I think the problem is that the cities are not going looking for teams but the teams are going looking for cities. If the cities were looking, they'd have a better idea what it costs.

Posts: 32 Feb 13 12 12:00 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	my point is looking at the current situation of the northern teams of the NAL. the north is on its own as the south schedule is announced and ready to go like the north division dose not exist. edmonton seems to be the only northern team that would take any loss (financial and/or image) if they did not play in 2012...but if they do play other far away teams like maui, san rafael, yuma over and over and over again would that loss be worse then not playing at all? (i can only see maui, san rafael, yuma, and maybe fort mcmurry (at a high school field) be ready to play for 2012) Because of Yuma's ownership & failing locally... edmonton is the ONLY team from the north that is legit. (by that i mean if not for the distance between them and the AA, FL, ATL they could join their league with their ballpark and ownership) every other team could go away and very little would notice. while san rafael wants to play ball....does edmonton? why would they? with chico & calgary gone and who knows with yuma and maui...is not edmonton the key to 2012 north division of the NAL?

I hate having to bring up Edmonton again because I am going to be accused of talking about another Canadian city,lol So I will say this though, Edmonton has an amazing thing going for them. They have all the money needed, they have the best ownership that you can think of, and they have one heck of a stadium, the problem is that they are on a island of their own. The Key is to get the teams to go up to Alberta to play Edmonton is the issue, if they can make the trip then we do not have a issue. IF they can not afford the far travel costs, then lets hope the Edmonton club will help subsidize the visitor teams travel which would not hurt the owners pocket book I dont think. But I have a feeling that Edmonton may stir the pot up pretty soon because these travel issues can not last forever. These Alberta issues have been talked about on here many times. I have always said a Alberta division is needed and I have been attacked for saying so, but the Fort McMurray proposal is what gave my point some backing. Edmonton needs Calgary back but there is no ownership in Calgary. 5 city's in Alberta already have NAL size stadiums and the population to support them. If Fort McMurray gets a stadium then it will become 6 cities. Of the 6 city's , only 3 would be needed to make solve Edmontons problems in the NAL. And thats all I have to say about that now let the name calling and other attacks happen to me now. Note to readers, I am not being a typical gullible Winnipeger, I am just stating what exists in Alberta and the possibility that could happen if you get the right owners involved.

On another note, I started a similar thread. I believe last season the TX teams played solely against each othe.

Of course, Texas League is already taken. And again, the problem with Edmonton is that it's 1,300 miles from anything else. If they could find 4 or 5 "operations" for an Alberta division, they'd still be 1,300 miles from anything else.

Now here is a new issue with Alberta that is good in a sence is that they're big jobs are starting to man up again which means even more oil money, ect. Could help speed things up if Fort McMurray were to get a team. Also I am starting to think that the Texas Teams will eventually break away from the NAL anyway. I was never a big belierver in the NAL or the GBL concept from the start. I debated with Chad a while back on the Air vs buses and I still believe that cities in Minor ball need to be closer. But there are exceptions. Even if the NAL folded, Edmonton would not go away. Edmonton will keep a team playing in Telus over high water.

Some people say that baseball and basketball are not as popular as a pro sport in Canada as it is in the USA, but recently a new basketball league is in Canada now http://www.nblcanada.ca/index.php so as far as Canadian indy teams popping up, you should never say never.

You probably need at least three times that many potential markets to cover for the one team that always folds. And somebody always folds in indy ball. They always will.

These things can wait for a little while longer, but not to much longer. Spring Training is starting and their cuts feed the indy leagues. It may be winter in Edmonton. But that doesn't affect the baseball calendar.

I don't take this as official for anything. I can't find much in the way of schedules. It seems pretty helter-skelter. Fairly normal procedure for these guys. I did read on the NAL board that Fullerton is in negotiations for a place to play and -- the kicker there -- the owner says he is considering a community "ownership" plan something like the Packers have. Both Wisconsin (Appleton) and Beloit have been around for a long time and have withstood all the franchise shifts that have characterized the league as yuppie investors have bought teams and moved them to greener pastures. MLB baseball forbids community ownership because they can't be sold and if teams cannot be sold the value of other teams cannot appreciate. I would assume MiLB would also discourage community ownership for the same reasons. Have any clubs in the NoL or AA ever been truly community owned ( no one person having controlling interest?).
