It was a great night last night at the ballpark - the weather was perfect, no wind, a good crowd (4003), and some new between inning promotions that seemed a
bit more interesting than some in the past. The Dogs looked very good and I see a lot of potential with this team. Yount hit it out of the park in his first
official plate appearance as a Saltdog at home. Tinius looks solid defensively at third, and Ryan Trytten looked awesome on the mound.

WOW - Nice to see a 100% positive positive post - Thanks NUDAN - and the second night was good to. - what do you think about Johnny Kaplan - some speed and the
potential for lots of stolen bases? Go SALTDOGS. Lets hope that being at home with fans behind them helps the team really get some momentum going. I'll be
there every game to cheer them on.
I enjoy reading all of the posts - an old dog can learn new tricks - some of the posts are a learning experience, some are just entertaining, and a few can get your blood boiling. PS - I've changed my name to OLDSALTYDOG to help clarify that I am OLDER THAN DIRT and that's how spellcheck choose the word "exposition" instead of "exhibition" when posting about the Beatrice game against the Wingnuts (oer maybe my brain and fingers were both frozen and not working after setting out in the bitter wet cold to watch that game - not mkany had the muster to do so). Glad everyone had a good laugh over that, but now that we have some home games to watch, there are real things to chat about. Also, I don't work for Saltdogs PR or have any connection with them (my post about the Beatrice game was way before theirs, not a copy of what they had to say). I'm an unpaid PR - life has taught me that it is a lot healthier to be positive - and I am so glad to have baseball back in Lincoln after so many years that I only have good things to say about it. Every contact I've ever had with anyone in the organization ( interns, administration, players, coaches. Homer) tells me they are giving it their all and create a good experience for the fans with every game. |

OldSalty, are you old enough to have gone to the Chiefs/Athletics games?
Looks like the team is coming together great...I like Kaplan and I think he's going to create a lot of runs this year, I'm hoping Yount has that breakthrough year that he needs and I even got a chance to meet Felix Jose after the game the other night and he seems like a real nice guy. I couldn't get to Saturday because of work and today my kid had his last flag football game so I couldn't go today either, but I will get out there as often as I can.

Yes I am that old - my grandpa and my uncle took me to those games. and when baseball was over in the fall, there were rodeos at the ball field. Every now
and then I attend an American Legion game there. It's nice to see that old field has a new life.
This will break your heart - the folks who set next to me, were trying to pare down to a smaller living space about 10 years ago so they just threw away tons of stuff they had kept over the years. And in that stuff was programs, pictures, and autographs that the wife had from going to the Cheifs games as a girl. Glad to see that you are a fan and that you buy, sell, and collect memorabilia - there has to be someone for every occasion to keep that history alive. |

That does break my heart to hear that...there is so little out there regarding Lincoln's minor league baseball history...I always enjoy conversing with
those who actually attended Chiefs and Athletics games. I can only imagine what it must have been like to witness Dick Stuart on his way to 66 homers. A nice
fellow out in California attended an estate sale after Dick Stuart had passed away and picked up a bunch of stuff including a scrapbook that Stuart kept while
he was in Lincoln he sent me a bunch of that stuff...Stuart had kept all the newsclippings from that 1956 season and wrote notes on them here and there..he had
quite the ego.
That's Stuart's handwriting on the balls where he wrote "Fortune" "Fame".
Here's a great snapshot of Nellie Fox with the Gooch Mills in the background
And this is about as far back as I've found anything regarding Lincoln's baseball team -1906 the first year in the Western League

How's this for a collar - Bob Unglaub managed the 1911 Lincoln Railsplitters. Paul Cobb was an outfielder on the '11 team, he was Ty Cobb's
brother and he played many years in Lincoln.
Here's a shot of opening day in Antelope Park

and here's a player (Bob Powers) from the 1916 squad -same shot as that in my current avatar

Awesome pictures - The Saltdogs should have a baseball history night and get you to display your memorabilia. I'd like that more than some of the other
promotions they have. They could also buy some of your stories for the programs sheets for each home stand/teams. I like the nightly programs they had
better a couple of years ago when they had little articles on Saltdogs players in there as am mostly interested on what is going on wioth the Saltdogs or the
history of Lincoln, not so much on the other independent leagues or stuff they are putting in the programs now. Hope we do well against Shreveport starting
tonight - the St. Paul series ended up well - Maybe we need all home games. See you at the ballpark

Hey Oldsalty, I'll be at the game tonight with my family...in fact my son is the mini-manager tonight.
I'd love for the Saltdogs to recognize the history of baseball in Lincoln
any way they can...Mike Babcock and Don Bryant know as much or more than anyone in Lincoln about the history of baseball here and I think I've seen Bryant
at some games in the past....Babcock is the official scorer and he's always at the games.

Actaully Babcock is no longer the official scorer for the dogs. He started the year off doing the official score book, but has since stepped away from the
position.
