Thank-you, thank-you! Back to business ... KANSAS CITY T-BONES at WINNIPEG GOLDEYES May 15, 16, 17, 18 at Canwest Park Ah, the season opener. The Fish usually start on the road, but not this year. It seems we may even begin with some decent weather. I was just down in Vegas last weekend (94F). That was a little too hot for me at this time of the year, so I took in shows instead of the PCL. (The wife was not keen on baseball, but did want to see the topless Folies Bergere! So I suffered through that. ) The Thursday and Saturday night games are on Shaw Cable TV. I have tickets for Friday night and Sunday afternoon. So I get to see it all. This year's ticket packs went from 8 games to 9 games, I guess so that all games are in one package or another. So the Sunday package people get a bonus game, which happens to be the Friday night encounter. The Fish should once again be a decent team. In a twist this year, there is no stupid 1st and 2nd halves to the season. There are 6 teams, 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd in the playoffs, like it should be. Next up on Friday night it is Brandon Kintzler for the Fish against Kenny Durost for the Bones. The box score link is not active as I post but should be when you read. Pre-game media stories: [Five Fish questions] - By Adam Wazny. In summary form, these are they: ... 1. Is Winnipeg manager Rick Forney on the hot seat? ... 2. The Northern League, a 12-team outfit three seasons ago, is now half that. How long can it operate as such? ... 3. Who will win it all this year? ... 4. Can Max Poulin do that again? ... 5. Is Fargo Winnipeg's white whale? Winnipeg is a sub-.500 team against Doug Simunic's boys over the last two campaigns (17-22 in the regular season and playoffs) and has already lost to the RedHawks three times this spring. Gee, only 26 more meetings left to go. Wouldn't that be great if they faced each other in the post season, too? Familiarity breeds contempt and boredom all at the same time. Goldeye fans will see so much of Fargo that they'll be dreaming of Jerry Lundegaard and wood chippers before the summer is over. What this game was lacking in technical brilliance was compensated by the dramatic ending. Fan favourite Max Poulin, who already had 2 singles, an RBI and a sacrifice bunt, led off the 9th and hit a walk-off HR. The result gives each side a victory in the season opener. Anyhow, here are your ... OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD OBSERVATIONS: 1. The Goldeyes D looks suspect. If the 3 errors aren't enough, they looked on the verge of falling apart in the field. 2. T-Bone SS Geoff McCallum made several outstanding plays. 3. The only Goldeye other than Poulin to have a multi-hit game was new 2nd baseman Trino Aquilar. He was 2-for-3 with a RBI and an error. 4. The Fish used no fewer than 6 pitchers, and all were effective. Only one of the four runs surrendered were earned. KCK had but 5 hits throughout the game. Brandon Kintzler started and threw 5 innings. 5. Scott Schade was caught looking at 3 third strikes. I wonder what is the record. 6. I was bitter at the absence of falafels. Hopefully they will be ready for Sunday. Don't worry, folks. I just ambled down the concourse to Sals and got a very high quality double cheese nip with fried onions. 7. This was the smallest Friday night crowd I have seen (5,200). It was a nice night, although the several hundred who wore short sleeves and/or shorts no doubt froze. 8. The usual PA guy was missing. 9. Ther hard-throwing newcomer Wayne Foltin came on for he save in the 9th with the Fish up 4-3. Not one batter got around on him. There was a foul pop out, a blooper to left dropped by Antoin Gray (LF) on a ball either he, Poulin (SS), or Brent Metheney (3B) could have caught., another infield fly, and then a dribbler to tie the game. 10. In between Poulin's game winning HR in the 9th and his sacrifice bunt in the 6th, 8 straight Goldeyes were retired with four of those being K's.
