And when I makes that first pitch, I'll put him next to Luke on the AA MLB alumni page.

I wish I would have been able to see them pitch while they were with Fort Worth, but they were drafted and signed by the time the Cats made the trip north.
It's great that this league can make a claim to these two outstanding pitchers. Best of luck to them! |

Holy Cow.
4-1/3 innings pitched, retired all 13 batters with SEVEN strikeouts. I saw both he and Hochevar pitch for the Cats. At the time I wasnt all that impressed with Hochevar, but Scherzer blew me away. Guy just goes after hitters and is fearless. Not to mention a live fastball, slider and nasty curve. He will be in the Show for a very long time. EDIT: Heres a link to watch the highlights of Scherzer's debut (courtesy of mlb.com). You can see what nasty stuff this guy has. http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200804302613477

Not only is his debut spectacular, the DBacks are putting Max in the rotation:

I added him to my fantasy baseball team, so he better do good in the rotation.

?Question? | ||

I know these guys are great pitchers. Fact is their agents used the AA as a form of blackmailing organizational ball clubs. These two highly touted YOUNG
pitchers spent such a limited amount of time in the league yet we are using them as our cover boys. There are many veteran players within the league that may
not ever make it to the majors but are great leaders and will stick around for longer than a few weeks. The Josh Pattons, Pedro Flores, and Jorge Alvarez of
the league are very loyal and consistent players who should be remembered more than a couple of super talent kids that have been in pro ball for 1 or 2 years.
I know players within the league who ask this same question.
These are just a few ideas that crossed my mind when I hear all this hype of how everyone loved these two young guys and how they will never forget them. Am I crazy or does anyone else agree?

It's nothing new. Indy ball has been used by players (and their agents) as a bargaining chip. One of the first was Jason Veritek who was signed by the
Saints for all of a few weeks before the Red Sox worked out their issues. JD Drew was the most notable to date (sitting out his displeasure with the Phillies
offer in '97 waiting for the '98 draft and the Cardinals to better the deal).
Of course it can fail (miserably) which is the tale of Matt Harrington who links the Saints to the Cats, Hochevar and Scherzer. Harrington's (first) agent had him go to the Saints and it was a downhill run from there. He never pitched well here and his career never took off (and he never got close to the 6/7-figure bonus he initially turned down). As for "remembering" players, whether they're the occasional prospect or journeyman, people will remember players with the skills and can show them. For example it was clear that JD Drew was destined for better things. His hitting was nearly as good as Darryl Strawberry's. You could hear it when he connected. |
