With the Saints announcing that a portion of their right field fence will have corn sponsered by Chipotle, I was wondering: Are there any other teams who have
done something similar to this?

The closest thing I've seen in the area is the use of the corn in the outfield as a part the introduction of the Sioux City Explorers. It's on the
cover of Steven Fatsis' book Wild & Outside:

That was temporary. I'm sure that there have been many ballparks that have real cornfields nearby. History says that happened at the old Metropolitan Stadium when it opened back in '61 with "big city" announcers commenting about seeing cows beyond the outfield fence. As for specifically growing it as a promotion within the ballpark and along the fencing, that may be a first. I was at Midway on Saturday and talked with Klep about it. It's another "Saints thing" and it'll be up to the club to take care of the corn. The first questions in my mind are where will they plant it? and how will they water it? Klep said that the dirt beyond the fence is pretty heavily treated with herbicide to control weeds. It's also not good soil in the first place so it sounds like they'll have to truck in some and probably put in some sort of box framing to get the level high enough that we won't have to wait until August to see something peeking over the first level of fencing. And then there's a question of how to water it. The field's irrigation system isn't designed to water out there so they'll either have to get a long hose, big bucket (brigades) or, like the farmers, pray for a lot of rain --that doesn't interfere with the home game schedule. |

Corn on the billboard | ||
|
I am going to post this bit from the Saints press release.
The billboard is believed to be the first of its kind in minor league baseball. It will appear in right field on the second level of Saints billboards, approximately eight feet off the ground and will have a planter at the base. Corn seeds will be planted just prior to the beginning of the season. The way I read that is they will attach a planter to the base of the billboard and plant the corn in that. The corn will the grow up over the front of the billboard and not up from the ground. They could probably water it with a few buckets of water and lets hope they add a little miracle grow to make sure its knee high in time. This is my guess and makes the most sense. |

Thanks for posting those details Doc. That answers my questions perfectly --except how they'll water them (which I'm sure they'll figure out).
I hope the planters are big enough since corn tap roots usually go pretty deep (4+ feet). The last thing they need to have the stalks grow tall then fall over after a wind storm because the root system wasn't deep enough to keep it firmly up right when it starts to top out (at 6-7+ feet).. |

It would not surprise me to learn that some of the agri-types up that way are hard at work in the labs inventing a special hybrid just for this job.

they say there will be free Chipotle burrito coupons for fans on the 4th of July if the corn is knee high. Will that be knee high to Dave Rasmussen or Dave
Stevens?
