He didn't mention any names of potential new players only that the new assistant had given him some names of Latin players. Didn't mention Gray at all
and if he said anything about Schade I didn't catch it. Talked about Young and said that he had been in contact with him but nothing definite yet. Rick
said they had some long talks. He didn't come out and say it but there may be some issues he wants settled before Young is signed. Rick talked about the
versatility of the new guy from Pensacola (Can play first, third and second). Mentioned the fact that if it doesn't work out for Metheny that he wants him
back. Same with Lentini. Really spoke more about the pitching staff since that is where Paul began. He's excited about Mendoza and Keppinger coming on
board. I do know another pitcher has been offered a contract. Rick said he was looking but players were tough to find and that the travel may become an issue
with some since there is only six teams. Probably March or April before it really comes together as players are released from respective teams in affiliated
ball. I would think catcher is the most pressing need at the moment. Good interview with Max.

I'm sorry--somewhere I missed that Lentini had been signed by a team. Who?

I didn't hear it on the show but read it on the website or in one of the Winnipeg papers. I could be wrong, but I'm sure it said that he will be
playing in the Mexican League this coming season.

The reason? I thought he was VERY successful and VERY dangerous to other teams. He's like Joe--anywhere out there and he's got it. Plus he seemed to
me to be a pretty dependable and consistant batter. Was it something internal? I know that he had a bit of a spell when people were down on him and his
so-called attitude, but I never saw him being rude or disrespectful when he was in Gary (just kind of quiet) and my seats are close enough to have seen and/or
heard any problems. I like him. In fact, I have an autographed picture of him on my wall. I'm just sorry that I wasn't involved when he DID play for
Gary.

I think the reason may be is that the Mexican League is comparable to Triple A (so I've been told) so probably looking at a better chance of getting picked
up by affiliated ball if he is successful in the ML. Can't say for sure I'm only making an assumption which probably means I'm wrong. I'm sure
Winninpeg wants him, he probably wants to try something different I reckon.

I haven't spoken to Feh about it but usually guys go to Mexico for the money. In one month you'll make about the same as you would for the whole
season in the NoL. Do you know what team he is going to?

I think Rick Forney said that Lentini is on a one month contract.
After the month he will get signed/extended if not he has a good shot at being back in Winnipeg. Rick also indicated, like Ehrnsberger said, he will make a good sized chunk of change even if he does stay down in Mexico for only a month. |
