As for how it will turn out for them... that's a tougher question and one that will be answered as their 2008 season progresses.

The improvement they expect to see are in reduced costs (no subsidy, cheaper flights to CA) and greater stature (better bargaining position) as I posted above
(in the slew of articles).

If these 2 teams do get into a league, say the Golden league, do the players automatically follow in the deal, I seem to remember there being big trouble with
that when the 4 teams left the Northern League.

There is reason for some concern about that. Player contracts are through the league and may technically tie them to the NoL --requiring a dispersal draft.
When the AA clubs split most players were put on waivers (assuming that still were signed into the next season).
There's been little discussion about that point since everything's gone quiet since they announced the split --including no formal announcement of their merging with the GBL. |

Tidbit from Bob Wirz | ||
|
In his weekly newsletter Bob Wirz' got a quote on the AB-GBL activity:
Golden League CEO Dave Kaval confirmed Thursday "conversations (with Edmonton and Calgary) are taking place", and he reminded that "we've long had a goal of multiple divisions" while also cautioning that such a decision, like any other, must make sense from a business standpoint.Since "Thursday" means yesterday, they must be busy working things out. |

....still nothing there about the Alberta split. Unless you click on the Calgary logo and transfer to their website.

Some things move slowly and honestly, most baseball guys are really not really big on the web to get stuff like that is done quickly. I suspect that Clark
simply hasn't contacted Skiltech to update the site.

just something about the league that doesn't make sense. the rules say that there is no waiver wire and no disabled list, but on the transactions, teams
WERE putting players on the disabled list and also waiving players. what's up with this?
God bless all of the players who put on a trappers jersey.

possible, with the majority of each team's road trips involving a series against eachother, then one series against an eastern team. Reverse this, and
imagine how well Fargo would like it: Imagine having the majority of your road trips feature one series against an eastern team, fly to Alberta to face one
team, then fly back. That was the NL's idea of scheduling. One has to speculate whether it was deliberate.

Only a matter of paperwork now, News Conference Tuesday
|
The Calgary Herald (finally) has an update on the situation: Vipers set to join Golden League
It's only a matter of paperwork now for the Calgary Vipers to join baseball's Golden League next season. So the news will be made on Tuesday and the transition complete. And there's still that rumor of a lawsuit... Officials with the Vipers refused to comment, pending a potential lawsuit with the Northern League.Who knows when that may be filed. |

Lawsuit????? | ||

I can assure you there will be no lawsuit and if there is one it will be made by the Alberta teams. I will not say too much but I assure you all is well in
Viperville!!!!

The note on a potential team in Kamloops is interesting too. That is about a 6-7 hour bus ride from Calgary. Wonder if they are also going to try and lure
Kelowna into the pros? Their PIL team is quite isolated, while a pro rival with Kamloops might help.

Same story, different league?

Well... in all of this one wonders how much due diligence has been done.
Yes GBL expenses might be lower and centralized, but are there any truly good western CA markets with good facilities (or ones that can be upgraded inexpensively)? |

they are specifically mentioned. Saskatoon or Regina maybe, probably with upgrades though.

It's Official now -- according to BPD
|
BPD says they've confirmed the move to the GBL and there should be an official announcement some time to day from Calgary. Edmonton will follow tomorrow.
They also had this to add: The final agreements didn't become final until this week -- despite what some reporters have written -- and Bne big factor for the Alberta teams making the switch was the GBL's willingness to look at additional Canadian markets for expansion. Given the strength of the loonie and the generally good economy in western Canada (thanks to the strong price of oil), teams in western Canada probably have a good shot at making it if ballpark issues can be worked out; That things weren't final fits with all the comments that no one had "any talks" until the announcement of the split. As for the expansion, that only makes sense. As for success because of the economy in western Canada, well... that's harder to fully believe but might make a difference. |

Calgary Joins GBL! | ||
|
Now it's "really" official, for Calgary at least, given this GBL press release yesterday: Golden Baseball League Expands to
Calgary
For fans from AB there are a few details about the upcoming season such as the 88-game season, but not much else. |

Doc Halladay wrote: Was Kelowna the CBL team that had to use a portable mound on a fastball field or was that Victoria? The Calgary release had a mention of the targeted expansion: Kaval pointed out that the Golden League vision is for two to four more Canadian franchises in the next two years. Victoria, Surrey, Kelowna and Kamloops, British Columbia and Saskatoon and Regina, Saskatchewan are the cities being targeted by the league. I would guess that the CBL city that used the portable mound would be out and both Kamloops and Kelowna wouldn't both get teams. So I'm putting my money on Surrey and Victoria and Saskatoon and Regina as the 4 teams to be added in the next two years. I wonder if the next two years means this winter and next winter or next winter and 2009? |
