When was the last time the Birds made the playoffs?

2001, they were knocked out in the first round by Lincoln.
To date, that is the only time the Surly Birds have made the post season. Given the power in their lineup, I think that will change this week. |

They looked strong at Midway this weekend.

They certainly did. I believe their magic number is 4. For them to lose now would require them lose (a lot) to Sioux City and have the Saints surge back later
this week at the Bird Cage.
They're not a "lock" to win the first half, but they're in excellent position to do it. |

Figured out their magic # is five. 26 Bird wins + 18 Saints losses = 44. 49-44 = 5

Oh, 2001 was frustrating. We won both halves that year, then only won one play-off game. I have a rather vivid memory of listening to game four (which we lost
by 6 runs) on the radio while killing weeds that were growing through cracks in the driveway. I took out a lot of frustration
on those poor weeds.
One thing about this year is that we'll either win or lose the first half at home, and so have a chance to celebrate with the guys. In 2001 they clinched in Duluth (on the last day of the half). I'm really looking forward to the games this week - I suspect (hope!) the atmosphere at the birdcage will be very exciting. |

If you're right their magic number is is now 3.

He's right. Magic number is now 3. Lincoln is mathematically eliminated, and Wichita is one loss (or one Canaries win) away.
Yeah, I know, the math seems to give Lincoln a magic number of 1 and Wichita 2, but those two teams were rained out earlier in the season and aren't going to make up the rainout. So they've only got 47 games this half, not 48. |

Yeah, 2001 was frustrating. We had by far the best team. If I remember correctly one of the most frustrating things was that we should have given some of
our regulars a day off in the second half. Especially our catcher, we had an inexperienced local kid as the backup, and he should have gotten a little more
playing time. Then our starting catcher ( Greg Malucknik I believe) broke his wrist. Over all thoh I think the team was just outplayed by Lincoln.

Wow! Long time coming! Maybe the local media can get off their backs for awhile! (But, I'm not bitter!) Now to get on with the second half and get their
team healthy.

Yes... Congrats to the Canaries to winning the first half and another trip to the post season.

Good job Sioux Falls. I sure would like to see the Dogs and Canaries go head to head in the playoffs.

The first thing I told my wife when we got to the ball park was that it would take a line drive home-run to get it out tonight with the wind blowing in so
hard. 3 line drive home runs later I'm watching the birds celebrate winning the first half. Great game.

They've started the process of selling play-off tickets now, but they're only allowing for five possible Canaries home games.
Which, unless they're missing something, means that the league would give first-round home-field advantage to a wild-card team. Is that right? |

They do this for travel reasons. Teams normally lose money during the post-season so they try to keep the travel to a minimum.
