beerbarons What pro baseball team played In Wesley Park. I thought it used for junior and senior ball. Wesley Park was owned and built by Wesley College which became United College which then became Univercity of Winnipeg. I used to eat my luch there along with all kids in YMCA summer program as it was only a block from the Y. Wesley Park was right behind The old building at fron of UOW it was only a square city block large. The only Pro ball ever in Winnipeg was The Winnipeg Maroons 1902 to 1942 in the Northern League and they played at Happyland Park which is where Wolseley Scool now sits . They then went to Sherbourne Park to play from 1923 to 1942 Then there were the two different Goldeye teams both who also played in The Northern League Bill ps I think the bigger building behind the houses on right hand side of picture is the Old Adult Education Center which still sits On what today is Colony Ave. I could be wrong but some of you other older fans may recognice it

Perhaps you are right Care, but look at that attendance!!! Wow!
For that back that was a very large crowd. Did the park look like that when you had lunch there? Because it looks pretty big. Would you also know what game is being played there when that picture was taken? It looks to big to be a amature game. |

Interesting read. 4000 fans attended a game over 100 years ago. That is really good. matches most of the game attendances of today. |

Well you learn something everyday
http://cec.chebucto.org/ClosPark/HL-Winn.html there is the stadium midway through that page. I wish Winnipeg had a park like that again. I always wanted a park at the forks and thought that Tinker-town and Thunder Rapids should have been moved to the forks near the ballpark. |

beerbarons Wesley Park as I remember it had a Green plywood fence around the parlk area and had wooden bleachers running up the sides in the 1950s. There were not
large grandstans behind backstop.

I am agreeing with you my freind, I just thought that the pic of Wesley Park above may have been a special sporting event like a serious playoff game or a all
star game of some kind. It just seems very large of a crowd for a simple amature ball game.

We could probably do some sleuthing and assume that this was no ordinary game because of the fact that somebody saw a need to photograph it.
It may have been a barnstorming exhibition, and depending on who played for the "locals," the betting line or public interest was pretty high. Barnstorming by the pros was common back then. If it was toward the end of September, it could easily have been some Triple-A or even major league players. |

the attendance back then doesn't really have anything to do now. Baseball was a real big sport in the prairies half a century and a century ago. Nearly
every town resident came out to watch.
God bless all of the players who put on a trappers jersey.

Well I think I may have to agree with JohnU11 that this was no ordinary game in this photo. Reason why I say this is because even though baseball may have been
a big thing in the prairies 50-100 years ago, no where did I find a attendance that big for a amature game.
I am reffering to the Manitoba sports hall of fame pictures of the past and others and no where do I recall seeing any pictures of amature baseball at any level with a attendance that big. The only pictures that come close to a crowd that big are the Winnipeg Whips at Winnipeg Stadium photos. Now it still could have been a amature game, or a college game of some sort, but one thing for sure, this particular game is no ordinary game. |

Like i said it didn't matter what type of ball it was, it still was baseball. Small towns packed up parks to watch.
Check this http://attheplate.com/wcbl/players_1.htm. There were 2 teams the Winnipeg Rios and the Winnipeg Winnipegs that played in the 40's-60's.
God bless all of the players who put on a trappers jersey.
