It was a great night last night at the ballpark - the weather was perfect, no wind, a good crowd (4003), and some new between inning promotions that seemed a bit more interesting than some in the past. The Dogs looked very good and I see a lot of potential with this team. Yount hit it out of the park in his first official plate appearance as a Saltdog at home. Tinius looks solid defensively at third, and Ryan Trytten looked awesome on the mound.

Inactive list?

Can someone more knowledgable on this stuff please enlighten me?
Cooter Roberts and R. D Speihs were placed on the inactive list this week. What does that mean? Are they finished? Or, is this some kind of a roster move to hold them for a while as they evaluate other talent?
I see that St. Paul also put Charlie Ruud on the inactive list as well. Seems odd they would be dumping him as he was one of their top pitchers last season.

It was a cold and wet night but the Saltdogs hung in there to put on a good show against the Wichita Wingnuts in an exposition game against the Wichita Wingnuts in Beatrice Nebraska to benefit the Beatrice baseball program. No locker rooms. no heat, no amenities. They signed autographs for every kid who stood in line. They walked to the concession stand just like the spectators to buy a cup of coffee to try and warm up. 0-3 in the exhibition schedule...no hitting and our improved (on paper) pitching is getting knocked around. Hopefully all these new guys are just slow starters.

Saltdogs.com reports that Pete Lacock will take over as hitting coach and Jim Haller as pitching coach. Mike Garcia was named pitching coach around two months ago along with Brett Kim as the hitting coach. Mike Workman will be back as 1st base coach and LaCock will handle 3rd. I enjoyed watching Pete coach third for St Joe last year. He seemed to really enjoy himself. If I remember right, he was hanging out in the Haymarket concourse during a rain delay last year having a beer and...

Looks like Fireworks Friday is back - which I love. Tuesday home games will have a running theme with a new T-shirt giveaway to the first 1000 fans - "Twist the Wingnuts", "Cage the Canaries", et cetera. I work on Tuesday nights so I'll miss out on those. The Jersey auction is back and we'll have a Pink bat auction night too to benefit breast cancer research. The standards are back also....I hope the baseball card set is easier to obtain this year - last years...

Hard to say if he'll be here for the whole season though as he will be eligible for the Major League Draft in June - and will most likely be selected.

Jarrett Gardner will be back for '08. RD Speihs, Nebraska native, has also signed on. Dustin Yount, son of Hall of Famer Robin Yount, also was signed. I thought Yount was one of the bright spots for St Joe last year. Lets hope his tenure with the 'Dogs is better than the other "son of (almost) hall of famer", Pete Rose Jr.

Doleman Gone

LJS reports this morning that Bill Doleman has left his post as Saltdog radio play-by-play man to pursue a national gig. Bill has always been one of the best baseball radio guys I've heard and he will be missed. Good luck to Bill and his family.

According to Saltdogs.com, looks like Joe Dempsey and Ross McCoy will have major roles this year. The news release states that Dempsey will take over as everyday catcher and McCoy will take Bryan Warner's real estate in RF. Josh Kauten was also signed and be back in the starting rotation.
